Summer’s over already?!
Aug 8th, 2008 by Natalie
Here I sit, drinking my coffee and I can’t help but wonder. Where did the summer go? We have less than two weeks left and what, on my list of things to do, did we accomplish? I had big plans with the kids. We were going to work on a vegetable garden, build a few mosaic stepping stones, maybe a potato launcher :) Plan a few day trips, plunge local swimming holes and take on a few community service projects…just to build character ;)
Instead we suffered a bout of rotavirus, (Did you know it takes approximately 14 days to run through a house-hold of 7?), 2 emergency room visits, 4 stitches, pet burial by the big oak and head lice, (which was much worse than rotavirus).
GASP! Yes, head lice! If you think it can’t happen to you, think again baby ;)
After a long day at work, I came home and the baby-sitter had a message from our neighbor. Apparently, our little friend who slept over several nights before, acquired some little critters from a recently visited horse camp.
While I pondered what do to next, (and googled what these little parasites look like), it occured to me that I may need to start interviewing for a new sitter…again.
I immediately examined my little ankle-biters and the first 2 out of 5 had lice! This is not good, this is not right. This is bound to keep me up all night! Okay, enough Dr Seuss. (Did I mention my other half happened to be out of town? Very convenient for him).
My chest is getting tight. Can’t breath. Then I shuddered, remembering just a couple of nights ago when a few of my kiddos crawled into bed and snuggled up with me.
So here I am, 35 yrs old amd I have head lice. As a mother of 5, who’d have guessed it would have taken this long?
Very cool, I’m picking bugs from my offspring as if we were monkeys. Do you have any idea how hard this is? Long, thick hair, (a few of them with curls)?! I was fortunate, it was only 3 of us who were infested. (But, you’ll have to guess which 3….(Sorry, my kids still have social lives).
However, even though this was definately…a summer to remember. I will miss those lazy pajama days, sleeping in and snuggling with my munchkins. And the lazy afternoons soaking up the sun in the creek. But this summer, has been a long one. So…Bring on a new school year. I’m ready! I think….
